We’re excited to invite you to a Journey Galena Workday on Saturday 10/12!

We’ll be starting the day off with a hearty breakfast at 8:00 AM (Note time change) we will meeting at The Galena Diner, work will start at 9:00AM; followed by a great time working together to improve our church space.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

• Insulating the gym ceiling
• Finishing up exterior painting (weather permitting)

No special skills are required—just a willing heart and a positive attitude! Whether you’re a regular volunteer or new to helping out, we’d love for you to join us in serving and making a difference in our space.

Time: Breakfast at 8:00 AM - Galena Diner for those interested, workday starts at 9:00AM

What to bring: Comfortable clothes, work gloves, and a servant’s heart!

Come help welcome international students who are invited to experience the best of fall traditions—from pumpkin paintng to s’mores—while enjoying meaningful conversation and connection. Christmas Eve Candlelight Service | December 24th, 6:30-7:30 PM
Join us for a beautiful and meaningful Christmas Eve Candlelight Service as we celebrate the birth of Christ together. This special evening will feature a traditional Lessons and Carols service, filled with beloved Christmas hymns and Scripture readings that tell the story of our Savior's birth.

Highlights of the evening include:

• A heartwarming children's story
• Candlelight ceremony
• A brief, hope-filled message

Weekly Snapshot 8/23/24

August 24, 2024.

All men are invited to join us at 9am at the building for a men's breakfast.

If you are able, bring a breakfast item to share. We will eat, fellowship, and discuss what scripture teaches us about being Godly men. If you a teenage or even younger son, this would be a good place to bring him along!

As the school year begins, we're reminded of the familiar sights and sounds: back-to-school supplies lining store shelves, meet-the-teacher events, and the excitement of sports seasons kicking off. But beyond these external markers, this season offers profound spiritual lessons that can guide us not just through the academic year, but throughout our lives.

The Power of Thought: Learning to Think Wisely

Education, at its core, is about more than just acquiring knowledge—it's about gaining wisdom. As Martin Luther King Jr. wisely stated, "Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education." This sentiment echoes the biblical perspective on wisdom, which is far more than mere intelligence. It's about developing a mindset and heart that continually seeks to understand God's creation and reflect His glory.

For students, this means looking beyond grades and test scores. Each lesson, each interaction becomes an opportunity to explore God's truth and grow in wisdom. But this pursuit doesn't end with graduation. As adults, we're called to be lifelong learners, constantly seeking wisdom through various means—be it books, podcasts, or formal education.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 9:9, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning." This verse beautifully illustrates how wisdom begets wisdom—the more we pursue it, the more we acquire.

The Bible: Your Most Essential Textbook

While there are many subjects worthy of study, none is more crucial than the Word of God. The Bible isn't just another book; it's described as "living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12). It's a dynamic, powerful force that can penetrate our hearts and transform our lives.

Scripture provides guidance (Psalm 119:105), accomplishes God's purposes (Isaiah 55:11), equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and sustains us spiritually (Matthew 4:4). It's not meant to be merely read, but internalized and lived out. As James 1:22 exhorts, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

By making the Bible our primary textbook, we align ourselves with God's wisdom and find the true education our souls need.

Being a Role Model: Your Influence Matters

An often-overlooked aspect of education is the responsibility we have to those coming behind us. Regardless of our age or stage in life, there's always someone younger or less experienced who can benefit from our wisdom and example.

This principle is beautifully captured in 2 Timothy 2:2: "And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also." We're called not just to learn, but to pass on what we've learned to others.

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern of mentorship and guidance. Whether it's Nathan confronting David, Elijah mentoring Elisha, or Moses receiving counsel from his father-in-law, God often uses human relationships to impart wisdom and bring about growth.

As we navigate our own journeys, let's be mindful of the opportunities we have to love and serve others by embodying Christ-like qualities such as faith, joy, generosity, and love. Who in your life might benefit from your experience and wisdom?

Avoiding the Trap of Pride: Embrace Humility

One of the dangers in any learning environment is the temptation towards pride and unhealthy comparison. Our educational systems often rank and compare us, potentially fostering feelings of superiority or inferiority.

However, true wisdom calls us to a different standard. Romans 12:10 encourages us to "outdo one another in showing honor," while Romans 12:3 warns against thinking too highly of ourselves. Instead, we're called to "think with sober judgment."

A key aspect of spiritual maturity is learning to celebrate others' successes and to recognize that our abilities and accomplishments are gifts from God. As Philippians 2:13 reminds us, "it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

By embracing humility, we open ourselves to continued growth and learning, recognizing that our worth isn't determined by our achievements, but by God's love for us.

The Gospel: Our Only True Hope

As we pursue education and wisdom, it's crucial to remember that no amount of knowledge or good grades can save us spiritually. Romans 3:11-12 starkly reminds us of our human condition: "No one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."

This sobering reality points us to our need for a Savior. The journey towards true wisdom begins with an honest assessment of our own shortcomings and a recognition of our need for God's grace.

The good news is that in Christ, we have an advocate. As 1 John 2:1 beautifully states, "But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." Jesus, who lived a perfect life, stands before God on our behalf, offering His righteousness in place of our failures.

Moreover, our worth isn't determined by our accomplishments or failures, but by Christ's sacrifice. Romans 5:8 reminds us that "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." This unconditional love forms the foundation of our identity and gives us the courage to pursue wisdom and growth without fear of failure.

As we embark on this new season of learning and growth, let's keep these truths at the forefront of our minds. May we pursue wisdom with humility, recognizing it as a gift from God. Let's immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing God's Word to shape our thinking and guide our actions. May we be mindful of our influence on others, seeking to be positive role models who point to Christ. And above all, let's rest in the gospel, knowing that our ultimate worth and hope lie not in our own achievements, but in Christ's finished work on our behalf.

Whether you're a student heading back to school, a professional continuing your career education, or simply someone seeking to grow in wisdom, remember that true education is a lifelong journey of discovering God's truth and becoming more like Christ. As we learn and grow, may we do so with hearts full of gratitude, minds open to God's wisdom, and lives dedicated to His glory.

They are the 2nd house on the left after you turn onto their street from S. Galena Rd.
The first driveway is Dave & Carol Crates driveway and there is lots of parking with easy access to the Correll backyard. Please save the spots in the Correll driveway for those who need level ground, and easier access.

Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on, there is lots of shade in the backyard. We will be gathering close to sing, pray and listen, and then spreading out to eat and enjoy one another.

Main course will be provided, you are invited to bring a side or dessert to share. There will be a fire and the "stuff" to make S'Mores for those interested

We Love the Dads at Journey!

Finding the Right Mix Between Teaching and Coaching
As fathers, our role in the lives of our children is vital and multifaceted. Ephesians 6:4 reminds us to not provoke our children to anger but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This verse encourages us to find the right balance between firm discipline and patient guidance. Imagine teaching your child to ride a bike: you start with firm rules for safety, but as they gain confidence, you gradually let go, offering encouragement and advice. This blend of teaching and coaching not only fosters a sense of security but also builds trust and confidence in your children. By setting clear boundaries and showing them love and support, you create an environment where they feel safe to grow and learn.

Guiding Kids Towards Independence at the Right Pace
Our ultimate goal as fathers is to guide our children toward becoming independent, responsible adults who make wise decisions. This process requires patience and wisdom. Think of it like working on a project together. Initially, you provide detailed instructions and supervise closely, ensuring they understand the basics. As they become more confident, you gradually step back, allowing them to take the lead and learn from their mistakes. This careful balance of support and freedom helps them develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. Remember, it’s essential to trust them and allow them to grow at their own pace, providing enough support to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed but enough freedom to learn and grow.

Being Open About Your Faith
In today's world, many are hesitant to share their faith openly, yet it is crucial for our children to see and understand our relationship with God. Being transparent about our faith means sharing not just the principles of our beliefs but also how they impact our daily lives. Picture a family dinner where you lead a prayer and share a story about how your faith helped you through a tough situation. This openness not only teaches your children about God but also shows them the practical application of faith in everyday life. The gospel liberates us from the need to be perfect and gives us the courage to guide our children towards God with hope and confidence. By being honest about our faith journey, we inspire our children to develop their own relationship with God.

As fathers, we have the incredible opportunity to shape the hearts and minds of our children. By finding the right mix of teaching and coaching, guiding them towards independence at a measured pace, and being open about our faith, we can raise them in a way that pleases God. Let us rely on the wisdom and strength that comes from the gospel, trusting that God will guide us as we guide our children.

You will not want to miss Sunday morning June 23rd. We will be celebrating all that God has done during our week of VBS. Our kids/students will be sharing what they learned, and there are some "BIG" surprises that will take place that morning you won't want to miss!

Village Easter Egg Hunt Is Coming!!!!! - We need candy, prizes and volunteers. Please bring your donated candy by March 10th. We will be packing the eggs on March 17th following worship. And the hunt will happen on March 30th - the day before Easter. This is one of our largest and most important outreaches of the year.

Let's Celebrate Together - Journey Vision 2024:

God through his church has met 15% of our Vision 2024 financial goal after just 2 months. Due to a generous offer of matching the 1st $5,000 donated in 2024, the $4465 donated means that we have raised $8,930 so far. What do these things mean:

• Set an Invitation Culture - There is an expectation that we are intentionally looking for others to meet our Jesus. We will use training, events, tools and primarily personal relationships to introduce those far from Jesus to Him!
• Establish a Discipleship Pathway - By providing a structured set of learning opportunities, we are attempting to create a community that is not just ever widening and multiplying but is also deepening in our love, understanding and pursuit of Jesus!
• Learn to Canoe the Mountain - Recognizing that we will continually face an unexpected road, we will be developing leaders. These leaders will be active in their family, neighborhood, church, business and beyond.

Our elders will be preaching through these priorities in the month of January.

Starting this February we will begin with our first Journey Institute offering:

Christian Beliefs - The four Wednesday evenings of February from 7:00-8:15PM Pastor Jerry will be leading the learning through the first four chapters. This active learning environment is encouraged for anyone 13 and older who desires to take a deeper dive into the foundations of our faith. There will be an expectation that the chapter will be read in advance of our time together, in order for our conversation/discussion to be most fruitful.

2. What Is God Like? - February 14
3. What Is the Trinity? - February 21
4. What Is Creation? - February 28

As we reflect on the new year, let's ask God to perceive the "new thing" He is doing. Whether you are coming into 2024 full of hope, or perhaps you are weighed down by apprehension of the unknown, God invites you to live each moment wrapped in the gift of His love and sovereignty. Yes, there will be wilderness and deserts, but we know that even there, the promises of God never fail. That is the gift that makes our perception new!

Abiding Yoga will be restarting this Saturday morning, 9-10:15am at the Journey Fellowship. Each week we come to our mats asking God for grace to perceive in new ways, in the ways of Jesus.  God is growing a community of ones who choose to intentionally abide with Him and with one another.  You're invited to join us . . .

The new year is less than 16 days away (It’s still shocking to me!).
I want to remind you that if you're planning to do some final 2023 giving, time is running out.
In case you aren't aware, The Journey Galena is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation. So anything you give by way of tithe or offering is 100% tax deductible.

In light of that, here are a couple of things you should know:
1. Tithes and offerings postmarked by 12/31 will count for deductions towards your 2023 taxes.      
2. You will receive a statement from us in late January with a total of all of your giving for tax purposes.

We all have chronic holding patterns in our posture - ways of sitting, standing, walking that feel right to us because of the habits we've built.  But when we pause to intentionally bring our awareness to those places, we may find that what "feels" right to us is actually causing dysfunction in our bodies.  

The way we turn our feet when we walk may be contributing to, or even causing our hip and back pain.  
The way we round our shoulders and drop our head forward may be at the root of those headaches we tend to get.  
The way we jut our pelvis forward to lean against the kitchen counter may be placing strain on our lower back.  
Perhaps you recognize some of your own ailments in the above list, or maybe there's other aches and pains you feel caused by different misalignments.  
One of the basic tenets of yoga is proper alignment in our poses, thus cultivating the strength of a firm foundation and preventing dysfunction and injury.  

Align: verb1. to bring into line
2. to be in or come into precise adjustment or correct relative position
Abiding Yoga gives us the opportunity to focus on proper alignment on our mats, and then use those lessons to reveal the importance of humbly aligning ourselves under the authority of our Holy God.  
Awareness is always the first step.  Join us on Saturday mornings as we practice the rhythm of creating intentional space for this awareness, seeking authentic, healthy alignment - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  
God is growing a community of ones who choose to intentionally abide with Him and with one another . . .

2023 has been a challenging year financially here at Journey. We have shared on several occasions that we have been experiencing a shortfall on a monthly basis. Several individuals/families have been going above and beyond to try and help cover it, but we could really use your help.
Finishing the year in the black would allow us to implement several improvements both to our physical property and ministry offerings. Please prayerfully consider how the Lord is calling you to partner with Journey.

Setting Journey Culture - #2

"There is no more characteristic theme of modern western culture than that of ‘identity.’ Talk is incessant about gender identity, racial identity, national identity, self-esteem and personal identity. The Bible, however, speaks about Christians getting a new ‘name’ in Christ, the more ancient way of talking about a change in identity." - Tim Keller

If a group's culture is defined by their "Norms of Behavior undergirded by their Shared Values" ... one of the goals at Journey is to make intentional decisions about those values.

A few weeks ago I wrote and said that we wanted to create an #invitationculture
Meaning that we wanted to foster a culture of Gospel Mission - intentionally outward facing and moving. We value the spreading of the gospel into all corners, starting in our own hearts, homes, neighborhoods, cities, states, nations and to the "uttermost parts of the earth".

Today I want to spend just a few paragraphs encouraging us to have a Gospel Identity. Counter to the abundance of voices around us telling us to find our identity in our sexuality, race, political party, and gender (that is just a few of the big ones), Jesus calls us to find ourselves in Him.

Here are just a few of the implications of being "In Christ":

• In Christ - you were given Grace - 2 Tim 1:9 - "...because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began"
• In Christ - you were Chosen - Eph 1:4 - "... even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world ..."
• In Christ - you are Loved - Rom 8:38-39 - "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
• In Christ - you are Forgiven - Eph 1:7 - "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses ..."
• In Christ - you are Justified - 2 Cor 5:21 - "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
• In Christ - you are made a New Creation - 2 Cor 5:17 - "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."

And that is just a few.
I pray that you might spend a few moments to remind yourselves and one another about your new identity found in Jesus.

Hi Journey Family ...

One of the most famous quotes in the area of organizational leadership is: "culture eats strategy for breakfast" by Peter Drucker. In a nutshell, it means that, no matter how great your business or organization's strategy is, the plan will fail without a culture that encourages people to implement it.

So what is The Journey Galena's culture ... who do we want to be?

We want to be Defined by 3 REALLY BIG THINGS:
1) A People with Gospel Identity - Having a Gospel Identity flows from discovering our meaning, purpose, acceptance and position in the universe is rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ. First, last & always we are "In Christ"!

2) A People who live in Gospel Community - Living in Gospel Community means walking side by side with other Christians while encouraging and exhorting one another to walk in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Followers of Jesus will live out the kingdom of God in every area of their life!

3) A People driven by Gospel Mission - Being Driven by Gospel Mission calls us to a commitment to invite others into this relationship with Jesus Christ. We want to spread the name and fame of Jesus into all places, especially where we are right now!

As the leader & pastor of our church from it's beginning I would tell you that we have historically done the first 2 things pretty well and the third not so much.

This is me telling you that you should expect that to change ... The Journey Galena will have an #invitationculture

Over the next several weeks and months you will be asked to take steps, steps of faith and boldness. If we believe the things we say we believe and if Jesus meant the things we know He said, we can't keep this to ourselves.

Some of the "asks" will be super simple, and some may require a bit more courage.

Here I am taking the first step; this is my invitation to you:
 Come to Worship this Sunday morning @ 10:00AM
Bring your spouse, bring your kids, bring your parents, bring your neighbors/friends/enemies ... but most importantly ... bring yourself!

Journey Weekly Snapshot 8/27/2023

Our new sermon series, The Real Jesus, started last Sunday. We will be working our way through the Gospel of Mark for the next several months.  We encourage you to spend some time in Mark preparing your hearts & minds for what we will be looking at each week.

The elders have also made the decision that all of our Community Groups will be doing our study in Mark each week. You are encouraged to connect with a group if you haven't yet.

Past sermons are available in the APP or on our website if you want to catch up or if you miss a week!

Our students (6th-12th Grades) meet each week in the youth room at 4:30 PM. This is a great time for our students to have fun, connect with one another and learn more about walking with Jesus. 

On Sunday Aug. 20th during our family meeting the elders shared a financial update and some plans moving forward.

1. At the halfway point of August, our giving is trailing our spending at roughly $3,000/month for 2023.
2. We are asking you to help us plan for the future by reading and filling out a brief 3 question survey. This is extremely important. Even if your answers indicate you are not in a position to give more to help cover, we need to know.

Abiding Yoga - Devotional Thoughts - Aug 17, 2023

There's this beautiful concept in yoga of rooting down to rise up.  Learning to intentionally steady our bodies, drawing into the core as we connect with the breath, then rising up into a pose with strength and alignment.  

We'll explore it together on our mats this Saturday morning as we also consider what it means to root into the truth of Jesus, drawing into our core as we connect with the Spirit, then rising up to the heights to which He calls us with strength and alignment under a Holy God.

Abiding Yoga isn't what's offered at the neighborhood gym.  And it certainly isn't about Hindu mysticism or becoming one with the universe.  Instead, Abiding Yoga cultivates the ancient Biblical disciplines of meditation and prayer as we worship the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Abiding in Christ is both an invitation and a command, yet many of us struggle to understand what that really looks like. In our fragmented culture, it's increasingly difficult to just be, to remain, to dwell . . .  to abide.  But through the discipline of unifying breath and movement on our mats, we come to a deeper practice of connecting the direction of His Spirit to our daily movements - our decisions, our words, our actions, and our thoughts.  "Be still and know that I am God" becomes attainable in fresh ways as we learn to surrender and worship with our whole selves.  The focus is always on Christ.  

In each session, we will employ physical postures, breathing, and Biblical meditation to grow in the practice of abiding in our Lord and Savior.  There is no need for prior yoga experience, nor do you need to be "flexible."  Sessions will be taught at a beginner to intermediate level, always with modifications offered to increase or decrease the difficulty.  So whether you are brand new to yoga, have been practicing for quite some time, or perhaps just new to the concept of Biblically-centered yoga, you are invited to join us. We trust that you'll be renewed - body, mind, soul, and spirit.  

Bring a mat and block(s) if you have them, otherwise, we'll have some available to borrow.  Also, bring a water bottle.  Each session is offered for a monetary donation of your choice.

Abiding Yoga will run Saturday mornings from May 20 --> Aug 26.

Palm Sunday Worship & Easter Egg Packing - Sunday April 2nd
We will gather for worship. And then stay on this Sunday for lunch and the annual packing of Easter Eggs.

Good Friday Worship - Friday April 7th 
We will gather on this evening to remember the cross and the sacrifice Jesus paid for us. This worship service helps lead us into the celebration of Easter.

Galena Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday April 8th - 1:00PM
Journey will be hosting the Village of Galena's Easter Egg Hunt again this year. This is a great opportunity to serve and love our city! More details to come: we will need help, packing eggs, setting up and running the event. Setup will start at 11:00AM.

Journey Family & New Faces Feast - Sunday April 30th - Immediately following worship
Every 5th Sunday we gather as a church family for a meal together. This is a great time of fellowship, getting to know one another, and typically there is an update from the church leadership about what is happening, and what is coming up.
All are invited: members, regulars and visitors.

Our menu this month will be Soups & Salads. Bring your favorite soup, salad or dessert to share!

Elder Led Prayer - Every Wednesday Morning 7:30AM - Zoom
The elders lead a virtual prayer meeting each Wednesday morning.
All are invited and encouraged to pray with us.

Missional Community Groups
We have a few options for connecting during the week in community:

• Monday Evenings - Kendall & Amy Eilola lead a zoom community group. They are currently working their way through the book of Romans. Contact Kendall or Amy if you are interested.
• Wednesday Evenings - Jonathan & Nicole Kelly lead a missional community that meets in the home in the Cheshire Woods subdivision in Galena. Contact Jonathan or Nicole if you are interested.
• Mondays starting Monday, April 10th - Jerry & Meg Funston are forming a new group that will be meeting on Monday evenings. This group is for those who are either new to their faith, or interested in learning more about the basics.
  • See Jerry or Meg if you are interested in helping to form this new group. We will be meeting 6:30-8:30pm, and enjoying a meal together as part of our time!
