We’re excited to invite you to a Journey Galena Workday on Saturday 10/12!

We’ll be starting the day off with a hearty breakfast at 8:00 AM (Note time change) we will meeting at The Galena Diner, work will start at 9:00AM; followed by a great time working together to improve our church space.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

• Insulating the gym ceiling
• Finishing up exterior painting (weather permitting)

No special skills are required—just a willing heart and a positive attitude! Whether you’re a regular volunteer or new to helping out, we’d love for you to join us in serving and making a difference in our space.

Time: Breakfast at 8:00 AM - Galena Diner for those interested, workday starts at 9:00AM

What to bring: Comfortable clothes, work gloves, and a servant’s heart!

Come help welcome international students who are invited to experience the best of fall traditions—from pumpkin paintng to s’mores—while enjoying meaningful conversation and connection. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the season, make new friends, and engage in meaningful gospel conversations.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service | December 24th, 6:30-7:30 PM
Join us for a beautiful and meaningful Christmas Eve Candlelight Service as we celebrate the birth of Christ together. This special evening will feature a traditional Lessons and Carols service, filled with beloved Christmas hymns and Scripture readings that tell the story of our Savior's birth.

Highlights of the evening include:

• A heartwarming children's story
• Candlelight ceremony
• A brief, hope-filled message

This intimate, hour-long service is perfect for families, friends, and individuals looking to pause and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. As we light our candles and lift our voices in song, we'll experience the wonder and joy of Emmanuel - God with us.

Weekly Snapshot 8/23/24

August 24, 2024.

All men are invited to join us at 9am at the building for a men's breakfast.

If you are able, bring a breakfast item to share. We will eat, fellowship, and discuss what scripture teaches us about being Godly men. If you a teenage or even younger son, this would be a good place to bring him along!

9 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

This active learning environment is encouraged for anyone 13 and older who desires to take a deeper dive into the foundations of our faith. There will be an expectation that the chapter will be read in advance of our time together, in order for our conversation/discussion to be most fruitful.

As the school year begins, we're reminded of the familiar sights and sounds: back-to-school supplies lining store shelves, meet-the-teacher events, and the excitement of sports seasons kicking off. But beyond these external markers, this season offers profound spiritual lessons that can guide us not just through the academic year, but throughout our lives.

The Power of Thought: Learning to Think Wisely

Education, at its core, is about more than just acquiring knowledge—it's about gaining wisdom. As Martin Luther King Jr. wisely stated, "Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education." This sentiment echoes the biblical perspective on wisdom, which is far more than mere intelligence. It's about developing a mindset and heart that continually seeks to understand God's creation and reflect His glory.

For students, this means looking beyond grades and test scores. Each lesson, each interaction becomes an opportunity to explore God's truth and grow in wisdom. But this pursuit doesn't end with graduation. As adults, we're called to be lifelong learners, constantly seeking wisdom through various means—be it books, podcasts, or formal education.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 9:9, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning." This verse beautifully illustrates how wisdom begets wisdom—the more we pursue it, the more we acquire.

The Bible: Your Most Essential Textbook

While there are many subjects worthy of study, none is more crucial than the Word of God. The Bible isn't just another book; it's described as "living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12). It's a dynamic, powerful force that can penetrate our hearts and transform our lives.

Scripture provides guidance (Psalm 119:105), accomplishes God's purposes (Isaiah 55:11), equips us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and sustains us spiritually (Matthew 4:4). It's not meant to be merely read, but internalized and lived out. As James 1:22 exhorts, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

By making the Bible our primary textbook, we align ourselves with God's wisdom and find the true education our souls need.

Being a Role Model: Your Influence Matters

An often-overlooked aspect of education is the responsibility we have to those coming behind us. Regardless of our age or stage in life, there's always someone younger or less experienced who can benefit from our wisdom and example.

This principle is beautifully captured in 2 Timothy 2:2: "And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also." We're called not just to learn, but to pass on what we've learned to others.

Throughout Scripture, we see this pattern of mentorship and guidance. Whether it's Nathan confronting David, Elijah mentoring Elisha, or Moses receiving counsel from his father-in-law, God often uses human relationships to impart wisdom and bring about growth.

As we navigate our own journeys, let's be mindful of the opportunities we have to love and serve others by embodying Christ-like qualities such as faith, joy, generosity, and love. Who in your life might benefit from your experience and wisdom?

Avoiding the Trap of Pride: Embrace Humility

One of the dangers in any learning environment is the temptation towards pride and unhealthy comparison. Our educational systems often rank and compare us, potentially fostering feelings of superiority or inferiority.

However, true wisdom calls us to a different standard. Romans 12:10 encourages us to "outdo one another in showing honor," while Romans 12:3 warns against thinking too highly of ourselves. Instead, we're called to "think with sober judgment."

A key aspect of spiritual maturity is learning to celebrate others' successes and to recognize that our abilities and accomplishments are gifts from God. As Philippians 2:13 reminds us, "it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

By embracing humility, we open ourselves to continued growth and learning, recognizing that our worth isn't determined by our achievements, but by God's love for us.

The Gospel: Our Only True Hope

As we pursue education and wisdom, it's crucial to remember that no amount of knowledge or good grades can save us spiritually. Romans 3:11-12 starkly reminds us of our human condition: "No one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one."

This sobering reality points us to our need for a Savior. The journey towards true wisdom begins with an honest assessment of our own shortcomings and a recognition of our need for God's grace.

The good news is that in Christ, we have an advocate. As 1 John 2:1 beautifully states, "But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." Jesus, who lived a perfect life, stands before God on our behalf, offering His righteousness in place of our failures.

Moreover, our worth isn't determined by our accomplishments or failures, but by Christ's sacrifice. Romans 5:8 reminds us that "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." This unconditional love forms the foundation of our identity and gives us the courage to pursue wisdom and growth without fear of failure.

As we embark on this new season of learning and growth, let's keep these truths at the forefront of our minds. May we pursue wisdom with humility, recognizing it as a gift from God. Let's immerse ourselves in Scripture, allowing God's Word to shape our thinking and guide our actions. May we be mindful of our influence on others, seeking to be positive role models who point to Christ. And above all, let's rest in the gospel, knowing that our ultimate worth and hope lie not in our own achievements, but in Christ's finished work on our behalf.

Whether you're a student heading back to school, a professional continuing your career education, or simply someone seeking to grow in wisdom, remember that true education is a lifelong journey of discovering God's truth and becoming more like Christ. As we learn and grow, may we do so with hearts full of gratitude, minds open to God's wisdom, and lives dedicated to His glory.

They are the 2nd house on the left after you turn onto their street from S. Galena Rd.
The first driveway is Dave & Carol Crates driveway and there is lots of parking with easy access to the Correll backyard. Please save the spots in the Correll driveway for those who need level ground, and easier access.

Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on, there is lots of shade in the backyard. We will be gathering close to sing, pray and listen, and then spreading out to eat and enjoy one another.

Main course will be provided, you are invited to bring a side or dessert to share. There will be a fire and the "stuff" to make S'Mores for those interested

We Love the Dads at Journey!

Finding the Right Mix Between Teaching and Coaching
As fathers, our role in the lives of our children is vital and multifaceted. Ephesians 6:4 reminds us to not provoke our children to anger but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. This verse encourages us to find the right balance between firm discipline and patient guidance. Imagine teaching your child to ride a bike: you start with firm rules for safety, but as they gain confidence, you gradually let go, offering encouragement and advice. This blend of teaching and coaching not only fosters a sense of security but also builds trust and confidence in your children. By setting clear boundaries and showing them love and support, you create an environment where they feel safe to grow and learn.

Guiding Kids Towards Independence at the Right Pace
Our ultimate goal as fathers is to guide our children toward becoming independent, responsible adults who make wise decisions. This process requires patience and wisdom. Think of it like working on a project together. Initially, you provide detailed instructions and supervise closely, ensuring they understand the basics. As they become more confident, you gradually step back, allowing them to take the lead and learn from their mistakes. This careful balance of support and freedom helps them develop critical thinking and decision-making skills. Remember, it’s essential to trust them and allow them to grow at their own pace, providing enough support to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed but enough freedom to learn and grow.

Being Open About Your Faith
In today's world, many are hesitant to share their faith openly, yet it is crucial for our children to see and understand our relationship with God. Being transparent about our faith means sharing not just the principles of our beliefs but also how they impact our daily lives. Picture a family dinner where you lead a prayer and share a story about how your faith helped you through a tough situation. This openness not only teaches your children about God but also shows them the practical application of faith in everyday life. The gospel liberates us from the need to be perfect and gives us the courage to guide our children towards God with hope and confidence. By being honest about our faith journey, we inspire our children to develop their own relationship with God.

As fathers, we have the incredible opportunity to shape the hearts and minds of our children. By finding the right mix of teaching and coaching, guiding them towards independence at a measured pace, and being open about our faith, we can raise them in a way that pleases God. Let us rely on the wisdom and strength that comes from the gospel, trusting that God will guide us as we guide our children.

You will not want to miss Sunday morning June 23rd. We will be celebrating all that God has done during our week of VBS. Our kids/students will be sharing what they learned, and there are some "BIG" surprises that will take place that morning you won't want to miss!
